Flattening and Texturing a Fine Silver Chain

Step 1

Start with a fused fine silver chain.

Step 2

For this example we shaped our chain into ovals. See our shaping a fine silver component technique to learn how.

Step 3

Place the first link onto the edge of the bench block, holding the other chain links off to the side.

Step 4

Using the flat, broad side of your chasing hammer, start to hammer half of the first link flat.

Step 5

Continue hammering the link flat on one side.

Step 6

Turn the link 180 degrees and place it on the edge of the bench block, holding the other chain links off to the side.

Step 7

Hammer the remaining half of the link.

Step 8

Continue hammering the link flat on one side.

Step 9

You have flattened one link. If you desire you can use the ball side (other end) of your chasing hammer to add texture to your links.

Step 10

Repeat steps 3-8 for each of the remaining links. Check that the links are evenly flattened throughout.

Step 11

You may opt to use a tumbler to polish and harden your chain. Refer to our beading technique to learn how.

Step 12

Congratulations! You now have a chain that is completely flattened, polished and ready for a clasp.
