Basic Brick Stitch

Step 1

To begin, start by making a bead ladder. String two beads. Leave a 6-inch thread tail.

Step 2

Pass back through both beads. Pull the thread taut, so the two beads sit next to one another.

Step 3

Pass back up through the first bead.

Step 4

Pass back down through the second bead.

Step 5

String one bead.

Step 6

Pass down through the previous bead so the new bead sits next to the previous beads.

Step 7

Pass back up through the last bead added.

Step 8

String one bead.

Step 9

Pass back up through the previous bead so the new bead sits next to the previous beads in the row.

Step 10

Pass back down through the last bead added.

Step 11

String one bead.

Step 12

Pass back down through the previous bead so the new bead sits next to the previous beads in the row.

Step 13

Pass back up through the last bead added. Repeat steps 8- 12 until you have a bead ladder equal to the desired width of your piece.

Step 14

To start a new row, string two beads.

Step 15

Pass the needle through the thread loop attaching the last two beads in the previous row. Then pass up back through the last bead added. Pull the thread taut.

Step 16

String one bead.

Step 17

Pass the needle under the thread loop between the two beads in the previous row, then pass back up through the last bead added.

Step 18

Repeat steps 16 and 17 until reaching the end of the row.

Step 19

Repeat steps 14-18 until reaching the desired length.

Step 20

To finish off the thread, weave up and down through the beads in the last row. Repeat on the opposite end of the thread, weaving in the starting tail.

Step 21

Use sharp scissors or a Thread Burner to trim the thread close to the beadwork.
